1910 T210 Old Mill

This is the largest of all the T series baseball card sets and -- for whatever reason -- is among the least widely collected. Issued in packages of Old Mill cigarettes across the Southeastern U.S., this set has 640 known cards in eight different series. This set is known by three different names: T210 because of their desgnation in Jefferson Burdick's American Card Catalog, Old Mill for their back advertising and Red Borders for thier most distinctive feature. All three names are known and interchangeably used by hobbyists.

The fronts are simple black-and-white photos surrounded by a bright red border. The player's last name and team city are printed below the photo in black ink. Some series 3 cards have orange borders because of a shortage of red ink during the printing process. The backs are similar to the Old Mill backs found on T206 cards, except for a series notation along the top. Because of the brightly-colored borders and the heavy gloss used on the cards, they are easily damaged.

There are eight series of T210 cards, and each series covers a specific minor league: 1- South Atlantic League; 2- Virginia League; 3- Texas League; 4- Virginia Valley League; 5- Carolina Association; 6- Blue Grass League; 7- Eastern Carolina League and 8- Southern Association. Of all the players featured, 133 played in the major leagues at some point; most were on their way up, but some (like 19th century veteran Lave Cross) were past their peak and playing out their last games. The two most famous players in the set are Casey Stengel and "Shoeless" Joe Jackson (not his "rookie" card since he was in 1909's E90-1 issue), but other players like Hank Gowdy, Fred Toney, Jeff Tesreau and Al Demaree went on to make names for themselves as well.

This set is easily dated as a 1910 issue because of several events. First of all, 1910 was the only season of the Virginia Valley League's existence. Portsmouth of the Virginia League moved to Petersburg midway through the 1910 season, and all 16 players on that team are shown with Portsmouth in series 2. However, Maysville of the Blue Grass League moved to Shelbyville during the season, and both cities are represented in series 6. Finally, Chattanooga is among the teams in Series 8 (the Southern Association). The city was affiliated with the South Atlantic League for the 1909 season.

Despite the fact that the hobby is known for niche collectors, the T210 set has somehow stayed under the radar screen. Perhaps the fact that they were distributed through the Southeast (a "dead area" for collecting compared to the Northeast and Midwest) has hurt their collectibility. Whatever the reason, T210s are often found for much less than more plentiful T206 and T205 cards despite their relative scarcity.
