1961 Topps

1961 Topps #1 of Dick Groat
Card #1 - Dick Groat

1961 Topps #141
Card #141 - Billy Williams

For fans of Major League baseball, 1961 was a memorable year. One American League team moved to a new city and two more were added. Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle challenged each other to chase Babe Ruth's single-season home run record. Tiger batsmen (especially Norm Cash, who later admitted to using a corked bat for much of the season) put up career numbers as they tried to keep the A.L. pennant race close. In the National League, the Cincinnati Reds held off strong competition from the Braves, Dodgers and Giants to earn a trip to the World Series for the first time since 1940. Throughout the season, baseball's younger fans were treated to Topps' 10th anniversary effort.

1961 Topps #337
Card #337 - Al's Aces

For 1961, Topps went with a simple but effective design. The player's picture nearly dominates the front of every card. Two differently-colored boxes appear below the player. The box on the left has the player's name in large block letters above his position. The box on the right contains the name of the player's team. A thin black border surrounds the picture and boxes, with a white border surrounding the entire card. For backs, Topps reverted to using a player's full major (and, where they fit, minor) league statistics after using only past season and lifetime stats in 1960. The lifetime numbers appear against a green field, with a short comment above if it fit. Above everything else is a black box with the player's name, team, position and personal statistics. To the left side of that box is a circle with the Topps name, the card number and a baseball "stitch" design. Below the lifetime stats is a short series of cartoons (many drawn by famed Mad magazine artist Jack Davis).

1961 Topps #7
Card #7 - Chicago White Sox

The most striking thing about the 1961 Topps set might be the explosion of specialty cards. Many of the new subsets would become standard fare in Topps sets for years: checklists, league leaders, the Rookie All-Star trophy as part of a player's regular card. In a way, the new series pointed the way towards future sets. While not a subset or series, this set shows the first widespread use of "hatless" player photos. 1961 was the first year of a decade-long era where Topps would get pictures of players with their baseball caps removed. With expansion and trades, the "hatless" photos would make airbrushing player photos in order to show them with their "new" teams a lot more simple. This made for a lot of cards showing guys who looked more like scientists or salesmen than baseball players. The idea was great for Topps but wasn't as popular with collectors.

1961 Topps #35
Card #35 - Ron Santo

When rolling out the 1961 set, Topps changed some of the subsets found in previous issues. Starting in 1959, there had been a distinct subset of "rookie prospect" cards with a radically different design than the regular set cards. For rookies in this set, Topps simply added a yellow star to an upper corner with the words "1961 Rookie" (a thin black border was added to the star in later series -- card #441 Dick Bertell has the star only while #449 Bobby Bolin has the border); otherwise, the card was exactly the same as any veteran's. For Rookie All-Star team members, Topps added a trophy to a lower corner. The trophy was modified from the one featured in the 1960 Topps set, showing a front view instead of a more three-dimensional one. Topps would return to special rookie cards (in a multi-player format) for future sets, however, the Rookie All-Star trophy would remain a fixture in Topps sets until 1978.

1961 Topps #581
Card #581 - Frank Robinson All-Star

Although the rookie cards were a little different than in previous sets, Topps continued many specialty subsets familiar to collectors. Continuing a practice begun in 1957, the set was scattered with multi-player cards showing two or three teammates together. Except for a few horizontally oriented cards, they otherwise differed little from the regular 1961 Topps cards by their front design. A series that spotlighted the previous year's World Series runs from card numbers 306 through 313. The 1960 Series (won when Bill Mazeroski knocked the ball over Forbes Field's leftfield fence in the bottom of the 9th inning of the 7th game) has one card for each game played and one showing the Pirates' victory celebration. For the fourth straight year, the season's All-Star team made up the final cards of the set. Like all those other years, the All-Star cards marked a drastic change in card design. The All-Stars were made up to look as though their pictures were being thrust out of a newspaper, a design that would reappear in 1970.

1961 Topps #138
Card #138 - Danny Murtaugh

Manager cards return as a separate subset. They appear in two different series: the first group runs between cards 131 and 139, and the second between cards 219 and 226. They are not divided into leagues, nor are all managers represented (the Chicago Cubs went through four different skippers that year and none show up in the set). The managers are shown inside a red, white and blue-striped shield on the fronts with their names and teams listed in a white oval below them. Their backs are similar to regular players' cards in the set, with complete managerial records and -- if they fit -- their major league playing records.

1961 Topps #437
Card #437 - Series 6 Checklist

Since 1958, Topps had placed series checklists on the backs of team cards. Team cards returned in 1961, but instead of a checklist there was a recap of that team's 1960 season, with batting and pitching leaders and the record of each pitcher vs. every other team in the league. For the first time, checklists were included in the regular set on their own (in 1956 and '57 the checklists were inserted into packs but not numbered). Each series' checklist card featured an action photo above the list on the fronts and may have been the most elaborately designed checklist cards the company would ever issue. Another new series that would show up in Topps sets this year was the statistical leaders in each league. Cards 41-50 featured the top four or five leaders in a specific batting or pitching category from the previous season. Most of these cards feature Hall of Famers. These League Leaders would become a mainstay in Topps sets every year into the 1980s and would still show up every few years afterwards.

1961 Topps #477
Card #477 - Nellie Fox MVP

For Topps' 10th anniversary, they issued a special subset honoring all of the Most Valuable Players from 1950-'60. Cards 471-486 each show an MVP in either a head shot or waist-up photo set against a solid background (American League MVPs had a red background; National Leaguers had blue). Multiple winners (Berra, Campanella, Banks, etc.) were honored with one card only. "Old-time" players were spotlighted in cards 401-410 in a series similar to the "Baseball Thrills" series in the 1959 Topps set. While three of the highlights were recent (Don Larsen's perfect game, Mantle's 565-foot blast at Griffith Stadium and Harvey Haddix's 12-inning "perfect game" loss), most feature legends like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Walter Johnson and Rogers Hornsby. The cards have a colorized photo with nothing more than a graphic designed to resemble a scrap of paper with a "headline." On the back of each card is a mock newspaper article describing the event shown on the front. This series may have been added in response to Fleer's "All-Time Great" sets of 1960-'62.

1961 Topps #404
Card #404 - Hornsby's .424 Average

The 1961 Topps set is numbered to 589, but there are 587 total different cards and 586 numbers. Cards 587 and 588 were never issued. Those numbers fall in the All-Star subset; however, there are no missing players or positions from the All-Star team, so it may be likely that Warren Spahn was intended to be card #587 instead of #589 (the final series checklist lists him as card #587). Also missing from the 1961 Topps set is card #426. The checklist shows that 426 should have been the Milwaukee Braves team card, but that card was mistakenly numbered 463. As a result, there are two cards numbered 463: the Braves card and Jack Fisher. These numbering errors were never corrected. The two expansion teams (the Los Angeles Angels and the new Washington Senators) do not have team cards, but the Minnesota Twins have one in the final series. Two cards feature mistakes on Topps' part. Card # 161 of Sherman Jones actually pictures Eddie Fisher and #332 of Dutch Dotterer shows Dotterer's brother Tommy instead. This was good for Tommy Dotterer -- who never made the majors or had his own card -- but not for Sherman Jones, who never had another card. Finally, Frank Herrera has an All-Star card but no regular card.

1961 Topps #312
Card #312 - Mazeroski's HR Wins It

A few variations exist in the 1961 Topps set. All the checklists except for the first and seventh series have two or three variations. This would be a common theme with Topps checklists throughout the 1960s due to their practice of printing checklists with different series. For some reason, the variations were different with every checklist: one spelled Luis Aparicio's name incorrectly (and was subsequently corrected), one had different color schemes, two had variations in the copyright line and one had an advertisement added to it. The different variations are listed in the set checklist below. It's possible that a "new" variation may be discovered in the future. Some advanced collectors have determined which variations are scarcer than others, but as far as the hobby is concerned the checklists have no significant price difference among variations.

1961 Topps #41
Card #41 - NL Batting Leaders

As with most Topps issues from 1952-'73, there are differences in scarcity among the series in 1961. The high numbers (523-589) are especially tough. Compounding the issue is the fact that few star cards are found in the high series outside of the 22 All-Star cards. This makes it difficult for some collectors to pay such high per-card prices for relatively unknown players. Despite that minor issue, 1961 Topps cards are fairly popular. They present well in high grade and feature nearly every baseball star of the era (except Ted Williams, who was still under contract to Fleer and Maury Wills, who had refused to sign with Topps). The set marks the first appearance of Hall of Famers Juan Marichal, Billy Williams and potential HOFer Ron Santo. The big pictures and uncluttered format help make the set a winner with fans.
