| Card #85 - Marty Marion |
1952 marked the first year of direct, fierce head-to-head competition between the Bowman Gum Company of Philadelphia and the upstart Topps Chewing Gum Company of Brooklyn. For the next four years, the two companies proceeded to fight in the courts, the baseball clubhouses and the marketplace for supremacy. In the process, both companies put out some well-loved hobby sets. Losing some players to exclusive Topps contracts hurt immediately; every year from 1948 to 1951, Bowman had increased the size of its baseball card sets. In 1952, however, the company reverted back to 252 cards (the same number it had in 1950).
Bowman's design for 1952 set was not much different than in 1951. Color reproductions of actual black-and-white photos were framed inside a white border. Unlike Bowman's 1950 and '51 pictures, the photos were different (though many of the same pictures would also appear in Red Man sets that year). The cards retained the shape and dimensions used the previous year as well. The only difference in design from 1951 was that a facsimile autograph was used instead of a black box with the player's name inside. Card backs are almost identical to the 1951 series, except they use a 1952 copyright date and eliminated red ink. An offer to send in five wrappers and 50 cents for a baseball cap (valued at one dollar) appears just above Bowman's copyright.
Among major stars, only Ted Williams and Jackie Robinson are conspicuously absent. There are no major design variations. Some cards are found with different print variations, however: first series cards (#1-72) can be found with clear or dull images, and Bill Werle (card #248) is found with or without the letter "W" in his signature. Some collectors overlook these as print flaws rather than variations. Cards #217-252 are slightly scarcer than earlier series. Though not tough, they have a higher value.
Today, the 1952 Bowman set is significantly overshadowed by its competition (but to be fair, few sets are more favorably regarded than 1952 Topps). In comparison, the cards were smaller, fewer in number, and had no major rookie stars; in addition, there was not as scarce a high number series. Its only notable rookie cards feature Gil McDougald, Minnie Minoso and Lew Burdette (good, but not exactly Hall of Fame-caliber players). Despite its diminished stature alongside the juggernaut that was 1952 Topps, 1952 Bowman is still an important set, loaded with stars and much more affordable than one might expect.
