| Card #140 - Irving "Bump" Hadley |
The 1933 Goudey set is one of few in the hobby (such as the T-206 or 1952 Topps) that is so big, so innovative, and so loaded with important cards that it has practically defined its era. When a collector thinks about gum card issues from the 1930's, one of the first sets that springs to his mind is the 1933 Goudey. A landmark set, it was one of the first set issued in gum packs -- a practice that would continue for decades. At the time it appeared, this was (at 240 total cards) the largest set in quite a number of years, and the largest major set to appear on the market until 1949.
The card fronts feature a color reproduction of either an action shot or a player portrait. The player's name appears against the solid-colored background. At the bottom of some cards, there is a red box with the "Big League Chewing Gum" name -- not to be confused with Big League Chew that has been sold in tobacco-style pouches since the 1970s -- however, the box does not appear on all cards in this set. A Goudey copyright appears in a lower corner of the card, regardless of whether the box shows up at the card bottom. Card backs feature a written summary of the player's career. The card number and the player's name and team affiliation appear above the biography. Below the summary, an advertisement appears for Goudey's "Big League" chewing gum and "Indian" gum, and identifies the card as one of 240 (making this the only Goudey set which nearly gets right the total number of cards in its set).
The set was issued in series over the course of the 1933 baseball season, making it one of the first sets to do that in a single year. Though the concept of series was used frequently by Bowman and Topps during the post-World War Two era, previous sets that came in series were multi-year sets like E90-1, T206 and 1934-'36 Diamond Stars. The red "Big League Chewing Gum" banner appears on cards 1-96, 100-105, 115-120, 130-141 and 143-189. Waite Hoyt (#60), Fred Sculte (#112), Rogers Hornsby (#119), Glen Wright (#143) and Carl Hubbell (#230) have horizontal cards; the ones with the "Big League" banners have them running along the side of their picture rather than the bottom. The final 12 cards in the set feature players from the two teams playing in that season's World Series (the New York Giants and Washington Senators) and mention the '33 Series in the summaries, meaning the set was issued until well into fall.
With such a large number of cards compared with other sets of its era, many cards of Hall of Famers are found throughout the set. Aside from featuring most of the stars of 1933, some players are featured twice, with Babe Ruth having four cards in this set. There are several key cards in this set, including all four Ruth cards (#53, 144, 149 and 181), both Lou Gehrig cards (#92 and 160), and card #29 of Jimmy Foxx. Card #1 of Benny Bengough is hard to find in any condition. The major key card of the set, however, is card #106 of Napoleon Lajoie, who had played 30 years previously and had long been retired. This card was actually printed in 1934 (and features a 1934 Goudey design on its front, but without the "Lou Gehrig says..." or "Chuck Klein says..." panel added), and was only available to colletors who wrote the company about the "missing" card. As a result, the Lajoie card is so scarce and valuable that many collectors of the 1933 Goudey set will consider it complete without card #106.
Despite the fact that the cards were printed during the middle of the Great Depression, Goudey made use of good-quality cardboard on this and its later sets. As a result, many of its cards can still be found in decent condition some three-quarters of a century after they were printed and packaged one at a time with a slab of gum for baseball-crazy kids.
